CK says, " . . . one of his goofy sayings was, “The strength of your sneeze indicates the strength of your orgasm.”
Years ago, when I wrote COBOL for a Christian organization, I met Della who had the loudest sneeze I've ever heard. Totally monstrous and uncontrollable. Not a bit of doubt, or weakness about that sneeze. She was totally committed.
I often heard men in our department say things about the noise Della created, such as: "That's amazing! Astounding! Wow, that's three times today. Gimmie a break." At the time, I thought they were incredibly rude to comment about the noise. I certainly wasn't disturbed.
I'm nearing sixty now and Jim's opening comment in your forthcoming memoir just shook me out of my socks. I settled down & finished your narration. Please know, I enjoyed reading the excerpt and look forward to reading more.T
Hi Ruth. I replied to a comment of yours somewhere on this damned substack thing and hit something amiss instead of Post or Reply or ? and it disappeared. But I did want you to know that I read what you said but at this moment, I can’t tell you what it was.
Thanks Ruth. I'm glad you liked the story. As far as I know Jim never had an obiturary and he may not have wanted one. So I think this story was a way for me to keep his memory alive. As far as sneezing, it's definitely an under appreciated and little understood human response. It's interesting that Della's sneezes illicited a such keen reaction from the guys.
